If I Am a Coder… and I’m Called an Architect… Then Where Is the Architect

Updated: Apr 29

... and What Is He/She Being Called/Designated?

My work is clear. I write code. I configure systems. I build, integrate, deploy.

And yet, I am called an Architect. This is not unusual anymore. Across teams, people doing implementation are given architectural titles.

Which leads to a simple but uncomfortable question:

If I am a coder and I am called an architect…then where is the architect?

And more importantly:

What is the person doing architecture actually being called?

What I Do vs What I Am Called

Let’s not generalize. Let’s be precise.

What I do:

  • Write application logic

  • Design database schemas

  • Configure cloud services

  • Integrate APIs

  • Manage deployments

This is essential work. But structurally:

This is implementation.
